SPIF Patent Identification Information

SPIF - Supporting Members

Simple, free, human-readable

 A standard format for patents

Save time, save money, increase transparency, drive efficiency

Our mission is to standardize patent identification information.

When you send someone a SPIF ID, you know that person can find the same patent. When you send a list of 1,000 patents and applications, you know that person can identify every single one of them.

SPIF uniquely defines patent assets so that they can be used in patent analytics, M&A, patent information transfers between firms and buying and selling patents.

SPIF uses common, current, human readable patent identification formats and industry standard tools.

What People Are Saying

I have spent many hours trying to resolve these types of patent and application data anomalies.

I am glad to see an industry effort is developing to help resolve the existing issues and standardize things going forward!

— Bob Lopes, VP Strategic Intellectual Property, Comcast

Patent due diligence is often slowed considerably in the most basic task of identifying and verifying the assets in question. Having a universally accepted standard format will streamline the process and facilitate patent asset sales, licensing, M&A, financing due diligence and other vital business involving patent assets.

— Brian Griedel, VP Intellectual Property, View

Being able to uniquely identify patent assets is a fundamental issue to bring transparency to the patent industry, and we're glad to support the non-partisan SPIF solution.

— Kurt Brasch, Head of Patent Transactions, Uber

While we often refer to patents as business assets, we must first create a universally standard data format which will allow companies to search, identify and transact patent assets more easily. Removing this friction, will allow companies to more easily realize value from their patent assets.

— Suzanne Harrison, Founder of the Gathering and Author of Edison in the Boardroom
